Dagang Oilfield: Secondary development creates a second leap

The secret to the success of the secondary development of Dagang Oilfield lies in the precise understanding of oil and gas development down to two meters and the precise study of the micro-structure of single sand bodies. Oilfield technology expert Tao Ziqiang said that the achievement is equivalent to discovering 40 million tons of reserves.

Oil and gas development understanding is accurate to two meters, and the research object is accurate to the microstructure of a single sand body. This is the secret to the success of the secondary development of Dagang Oilfield. Tao Ziqiang, an oilfield technology expert, said that the achievement is equivalent to discovering 40 million tons of reserves.
Industry insiders say that secondary development is a revolution in the history of oilfield development, and it is also an eternal theme in the development of upstream development business.
On November 18, Block 24 in Area 1 of the Gangxi Oilfield in Dagang produced 304 tons of oil per day, setting a record high since its development in 1966. This is the result of Dagang Oilfield implementing the concept of secondary development and continuously improving the recovery rate through various technical means. This is a significant contribution for Dagang Oilfield, which has an annual output of 5 million tons.
In 2008, PetroChina proposed the idea of secondary development of old oilfields. At that time, at the Dagang Oilfield Exploration and Development Research Institute, some people said: "Dagang Oilfield has been developed for more than 40 years and is an old oilfield with high water content and high recovery rate, while the underground conditions of small blocks such as Gangxi are complex, so how can secondary development be easy?" Some experts said: "We have technological advantages. If we don't conduct structural research, it's not considered thorough secondary development." This concept caused a stir.
  New Technology Reconstructs New System
At the beginning of 2009, Room 1 of the Dagang Oilfield Exploration and Development Research Institute undertook the research on the secondary development of the Gangxi Oilfield. The research project became one of the key pilot projects for secondary development of old oilfields in the joint-stock company.
The technical route is the main factor determining the effect of secondary development. Faced with a large amount of old data, how to build a research system? The Exploration and Development Research Institute launched a "triple" technical roadmap.
First, reconstruct the underground understanding system. Re-acquire, process, and interpret seismic data to form high-resolution 3D seismic data, and conduct a fine structural understanding of high-resolution, high-density new 3D seismic data, finely depict the internal architectural structure of fluvial reservoir single sand bodies, and propose the concept of single sand body research, so that the research accuracy is deepened from structure to single sand body.
Second, reconstruct the well pattern structure. With the reconstruction of the well pattern structure as the core, starting from the second round, the well spacing is increased to about 200 meters; the well pattern layers are reorganized and optimized, combined with the wide application of new technologies, to improve the degree of water drive control, and ultimately significantly improve the recovery rate.
Third, rebuild the ground process flow. Large-scale ground process simplification and optimization centered on the Gangxi Oilfield has built a green channel for secondary development.
Researchers use high-resolution 3D seismic data and high-density well data, combining well and seismic data, static and dynamic data, and comprehensively applying various technical means to improve the accuracy of understanding complex fault block reservoirs and the reliability of understanding residual oil distribution; through the optimization and reorganization of development layers and injection-production well patterns, as well as the application of deep-well driving technology, the degree of water drive control and water drive sweep efficiency of the reservoir are improved, so that the oil layer encounter rate of new wells and single-well output steadily increase.
At the end of that year, projects such as "Research on Secondary Development Plan of Gangxi Oilfield" and "Industrial Test of Fine Potential Development of High Water Cut in Complex Fault Block Reservoirs in Gangxi" achieved good implementation results and successfully passed the review and acceptance of the expert group of the joint-stock company. The secondary development research technology of Dagang Oilfield has won high praise in the industry, providing reference for similar old oilfields such as Bohai Bay, and playing a leading and demonstration role.
  New Achievements Accumulate New Experience
Tao Ziqiang, a senior technical expert at Dagang Oilfield, said: "Strengthening the application of 3D seismic data, refining the depiction of the internal structure of sand bodies, quantifying the distribution of residual oil potential, deepening the reorganization of development well patterns and layers, optimizing the supporting technology of the driving system, and solidifying the supporting ground process flow. These seemingly simple 'six-pronged' technical strategies are the painstaking efforts of researchers."
These technical strategies have given wings to the secondary development of Dagang Oilfield. In Gangdong Area 1 and Gangxi Oilfield, 397 new well locations were selected for secondary development, and it is expected that after the implementation of the plan, a new production capacity of 531,200 tons will be created, with a cumulative increase of 3,399,000 tons of crude oil in 10 years, and an increase in water drive recovery rate of more than 5 percentage points, setting a record for the selection of new wells in a short period. The secondary development plan of Gangxi Oilfield won the Excellent Plan Award of the joint-stock company.
A total of 129 new wells were implemented in Gangdong and Gangxi oilfields, with a new production capacity of 264,300 tons and a cumulative oil production of 178,900 tons. Gangdong Oilfield produced a high-yield well with an average daily output of 80 tons. Block 24 in Area 1 of Gangxi Oilfield produced 304 tons of oil per day, setting a record high since its development in 1966, with a water cut decrease of more than 12 percentage points, and the overall situation changed from the high water cut development stage back to the medium water cut development stage in the early 1980s.
The accuracy of oil and gas development understanding is up to two meters, and the research object is accurate to the microstructure of a single sand body. This is a highlight of the secondary development of Dagang Oilfield, and it is also the secret to its success. Tao Ziqiang said that the achievement is equivalent to discovering 40 million tons of reserves.
When reporting the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" secondary development plan, academicians from the two academies commented that the secondary development of Dagang Oilfield had "the most detailed work and the deepest research depth".
